Glimpses from the West Coast of Jutland

These summer pictures express the interplay of light typical to this region, and hint at the often bleak weather which is a part of our lives in this dramatic corner of Denmark. Taken with iPhone 3 and Hipstamatic app: John S lens and BlackKeys B+W film.

Dybbøl Mølle

Dybbøl (German: Düppel) is a small settlement in the southeastern corner of South Jutland, Denmark. It is around 6 km (4 miles) west of Sønderborg. During the 1864 Second War of Schleswig, the Danish Army withdrew from the traditional fortified defence line of Dannevirke (after waters and marshes which supported its flanks froze hard in a hard winter) and marched for Dybbøl to find a better defendable position.

Although much artillery was abandoned, and the evacuation was executed in a snow-laden north gale in winter, the army arrived almost intact. The army entrenched itself at the Dybbøl Trenches, which became the scene of the siege and subsequent Battle of Dybbøl (April 7 – April 18, 1864). - Wikipedia

The Danish Clock Museum, Århus

I spent a happy hour today pottering about the Danish Clock Museum in the Old Town, Århus. The Museum consists of an original clock shop and clockmakers workshop from the mid 1800s, as well as an exhibition of about 100 of the approximately 15000 historic clocks belonging to the museum. Particularly interesting were the tower clocks with their exposed escapements, and a number of especially fine cabinet clocks.

The special effect achieved here recreates very well the rather ghostly feeling of the workshops and the ancient clocks, whispering the secrets of their makers in the dusky gloom of a winters evening.
